Overview

The Overberg Quirky experience is all about playful contrasts and unexpected moments, where wild coastline, creative seaside culture and cool climate wines come together in a refreshingly offbeat way. This is a day designed for curious travellers who enjoy nature with personality and a sense of discovery.

The day begins with a burst of adrenaline as you take to the shifting sands on a fat bike, riding across sweeping coastal dunes that feel worlds away from the vineyards and villages nearby. With wide tyres designed to glide over soft sand, this is a fun and accessible experience that invites laughter, a touch of challenge and a lot of freedom. The ever-changing patterns of the dunes and expansive views create a surreal and memorable start to the day.

The adventure continues on foot in Walker Bay Nature Reserve, where cliff top paths and quiet beaches offer some of the most rewarding whale watching in the world during the season. From elevated viewpoints, keep watch for Southern Right Whales cruising close to shore, often accompanied by calves. Even outside whale season, the scenery steals the show, with sweeping ocean views, dramatic rock formations and abundant birdlife. The trails wind past secluded coves and white sand beaches, where wildlife sightings and crashing waves create a wonderfully untamed atmosphere.

The afternoon brings a change of scenery as you head inland to the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, a wine region celebrated for its elegance and innovation. Rolling vineyards framed by mountains set the scene for a relaxed tasting at one of the valley’s character filled estates. Cool climate wines, particularly pinot noir and chardonnay, take centre stage, while winemakers share stories that reflect the experimental and forward thinking nature of this special valley.

The journey home is an experience in itself, following the legendary R44 coastal road. Hugging the edge of the ocean, this route delivers constant visual drama as mountains plunge into the sea and each bend reveals a new perspective. With the light shifting over the water and cliffs, it is the perfect backdrop to reflect on a day that balances wild landscapes, creative towns and unexpected pleasures.

This quirky Overberg journey offers a fresh and memorable way to experience the region, blending nature, culture and flavour with a sense of fun and individuality.

  • Tour Activities: Unpacked

Bike - Fat Bike the Sand Dunes
Once we are down near sea level (making it easy for all) We will make our way along the 4x4 trail getting used to the 4.7-inch fat tires before getting to the main Die Plat beach and ride along Walker Bay. We can rest along the way as this is not a race and just for pure enjoyment and to take in the sights as well as enjoying the sensation of riding on sand without getting stuck. When we reach the end of the 4x4 trail we will get pure white beach which stretches all the way to Hermanus. Along the ride, we will have plenty of opportunities to stop, rest and take photos and if lucky we will find the odd seal taking a nap on the rocks or surfing in the waves. During Whale season we can keep our eyes peeled for Whales and it is common to see Dolphins in the summer months. If we are really lucky we may even see a Great White Shark.

Hike - Whale Watching Cliff Tops and Beaches in Walkers Bay Nature Reserve. Whales, Birds, Wildlife
We’ll leave the popular town of Hermanus and take a short drive about half an hour further up the coast to one of the tiny harbour villages in search of whales. The dramatic cliffs dropping deeply into the ocean are a favoured haunt of the migratory Southern Right whales, and in peak season it’s perfect shelter for calving. Often, as you stroll along the pathway, you’ll have a bird’s eye view directly down onto these marine giants. Take the pathways leading down to the shore to explore the caves, isolated coves, and find that perfect spot to simply settle down to watch the whales enjoying this marine paradise.

    Wine Tasting - Hemel-en-Aarde Valley
Hemel-en-Aarde Valley lies at the foot of towering fynbos-clad mountains and faces out across the Atlantic, along the Hermanus Wine Route. This little pocket of paradise just a short hop inland from the busy seaside towns along Walker Bay is highly regarded as a unique small-scale wine-producing region, with fifteen wineries sharing a passion for producing premium wines in sustainably managed vineyards. It’s the perfect opportunity to sample a variety of great wines while we explore this world-class wine route.

Explore the R44 South Africa's most scenic coastal drive
Heading out of Cape Town we will take the scenic R44 that hugs the coast line all the way from False Bay to Walker Bay. Your whale watching starts here with a good chance of spotting these marine giants along the way. We’ll stop in Betty’s Bay to see the resident African penguins, and look out for rock hyraxes, or dassies as they are locally referred to. If time allows, we’ll also visit the Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens, a sanctuary with more species of vegetation than any other garden in the world.
