Overview

The Overberg Family experience is a day of shared discovery, gentle adventure and wide open spaces, designed to spark curiosity and keep every generation engaged. With its dramatic landscapes, friendly country towns and fascinating natural history, this region offers the perfect setting for families to explore together at an easy, enjoyable pace.

The first stop is in the Stanford area, where family friendly mountain trails invite young explorers to stretch their legs. These gentle walks are ideal for all ages, offering space to roam, climb and discover nature up close. Along the way, learn about local plants and wildlife, with plenty of opportunities for children to ask questions and lead the way. Nearby artisan farmstalls provide a delicious reward, with homemade treats, fresh produce and quirky finds that make for an easy and relaxed break.

Next, step back in time at Klipgat Cave, a Cape Nature heritage site perched above the ocean. This fascinating stop captures young imaginations as stories unfold of early humans who once lived here, using the cave as shelter while hunting and gathering along the coast. The dramatic setting, with waves crashing below, makes history feel real and exciting, and children love imagining life thousands of years ago.

From here, the adventure continues to Betty’s Bay, home to a charming African penguin colony. Boardwalks allow families to get close enough to watch these curious characters waddle, swim and interact, providing endless entertainment for kids and adults alike. Guides share fun penguin facts and conservation stories, helping children understand why protecting these animals and their habitat matters.

In the afternoon, the journey follows the spectacular R44 coastal road, often regarded as South Africa’s most scenic drive. As mountains tumble into the sea, the route becomes a highlight in itself, with plenty of opportunities to soak up the views and reflect on the day’s discoveries.

With a perfect balance of activity, learning and relaxation, this Overberg Family experience creates meaningful moments, shared laughter and memories that will stay with families long after the journey ends.

  • Tour Activities: Unpacked

Explore - Family Stanford Mountain Trails and visit Local Artisan Farmstalls
Stanford is a quaint little village just half an hour from the main town of Hermanus. There’s an abundance of activities for families and those wanting to explore the surroundings. This historical place, with beautiful old cottages, gathered around the huge grassy square, has a wealth of antique shops, great restaurants and artisan cafes. The mountain backdrop and sheltered vineyards offer plenty of adventurous options, like horse-riding, boat cruises, and superb hiking through this scenic spot renowned for quality birdwatching. All of this is within easy reach of the village.

Explore - Cape Nature Klipgat Cave
The tiny village of De Kelders is named after the cellar-like caverns which were formed millions of years ago in the limestone cliffs along the shoreline of Walker Bay. These caves were inhabited by Middle Stone Age people, and later, the Khoikhoi Bushmen, and is one of just three sites in the Western Cape where such significant historical remains have been discovered. Clamber down the cliff paths and explore this fascinating cave system with spectacular views over the bay – a former hunter-gatherer’s paradise of World Heritage significance.

Explore Betty's Bay - Penguin colony
Betty’s Bay is home to a large colony of African penguins and is a good option for avoiding the crowded walkways of the peninsula. Keep a look out too for rock hyraxes, or dassies as they are referred to locally. The rocky terrain along this stretch of coastline is an ideal habitat for these two species, and the location itself offers a relaxing, unhurried experience.

Explore the R44 South Africa's most scenic coastal drive
Heading out of Cape Town we will take the scenic R44 that hugs the coast line all the way from False Bay to Walker Bay. Your whale watching starts here with a good chance of spotting these marine giants along the way. We’ll stop in Betty’s Bay to see the resident African penguins, and look out for rock hyraxes, or dassies as they are locally referred to. If time allows, we’ll also visit the Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens, a sanctuary with more species of vegetation than any other garden in the world.
