Overview

The Overberg Active experience invites you into one of South Africa’s most striking natural regions, where rugged mountains, coastal fynbos and the wild Atlantic Ocean create the perfect setting for a day shaped by movement and discovery. Designed for travellers who prefer to engage with the landscape rather than simply observe it, this journey blends rewarding hikes, ocean adventure and one of the country’s most scenic coastal drives.

The day begins with a choice of two exceptional hiking environments. Explore Fernkloof Nature Reserve, where a network of trails winds through one of the richest concentrations of fynbos on earth. As you ascend through this pristine reserve, panoramic views open across Walker Bay, with the coastline stretching endlessly below.

Alternatively, discover the lush beauty of Harold Porter National Botanical Garden, where shaded paths, waterfalls and dramatic kloofs offer a more sheltered yet equally immersive hiking experience. Here, your guide shares insight into the remarkable diversity of indigenous plant life and its traditional uses.

From land to sea, the adventure continues in Hermanus with a guided sea kayaking experience. Paddling along the coastline offers a completely different perspective of this marine rich environment. Glide across the water as seabirds circle overhead and, depending on the season, keep watch for dolphins or even whales moving through the bay. It is an energising yet accessible activity that brings you closer to the rhythm of the ocean.

Back on land, the journey continues to Stony Point Penguin Colony, a lesser visited and wonderfully authentic setting to encounter African penguins. A gentle walk along the boardwalk reveals these charismatic birds nesting among the coastal vegetation, with the surrounding mountains and ocean creating a wild and unspoilt backdrop.

The return journey unfolds along the legendary R44 Coastal Drive, widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most scenic routes. Hugging the edge of the ocean, the road winds between dramatic cliffs and sweeping bays, with each turn revealing a new perspective of this rugged coastline.

This active exploration of the Overberg delivers a seamless blend of hiking, ocean adventure and breathtaking scenery, offering a deeply immersive experience in one of the Cape’s most captivating regions.

  • Tour Activities: Unpacked

Hike - Fernkloof Nature Reserve OR Harold Porter Botanical Gardens – A Floral Wonderland
Today offers a choice between two exceptional nature experiences, each showcasing the Cape’s remarkable biodiversity. Explore Fernkloof Nature Reserve above Hermanus, where 1,800 hectares of pristine landscape unfold through a network of trails suited to all fitness levels, from gentle walks to more adventurous hikes. This unique reserve is home to one of the richest concentrations of fynbos on earth. Alternatively, visit Harold Porter National Botanical Garden, a lush sanctuary where your guide brings indigenous plants to life, sharing their traditional uses as you wander through scenic kloofs and culturally significant gardens.

Paddle - Sea Kayaking – Hermanus
Sea kayaking in Hermanus offers a fresh and immersive way to experience the Overberg coastline from water level, where the scale and beauty of the landscape truly come alive. Launching from the calm bay, you paddle along rugged cliffs and kelp forests, moving quietly through clear coastal waters. The experience is guided and suitable for beginners, making it both accessible and rewarding. From the kayak, keep watch for seals popping up nearby and seabirds diving for fish, while the dramatic mountain backdrop frames the shoreline. During whale season from May to October, the chance to spot Southern Right Whales adds a powerful sense of awe, creating a peaceful yet exhilarating adventure on the open sea.

Off the Beaten Track Penguin Colony at Stony Point
Betty’s Bay is home to a large colony of African penguins and is a good option for avoiding the crowded walkways of the peninsula. Keep a look out too for rock hyraxes, or dassies as they are referred to locally. The rocky terrain along this stretch of coastline is an ideal habitat for these two species, and the location itself offers a relaxing, unhurried experience.

Explore the R44 South Africa's most scenic coastal drive
Heading out of Cape Town we will take the scenic R44 that hugs the coast line all the way from False Bay to Walker Bay. Your whale watching starts here with a good chance of spotting these marine giants along the way. We’ll stop in Betty’s Bay to see the resident African penguins, and look out for rock hyraxes, or dassies as they are locally referred to. If time allows, we’ll also visit the Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens, a sanctuary with more species of vegetation than any other garden in the world.
